I began practicing yoga in 2011, when I turned 40 and my youngest child started school. I had a bit more time for myself and thought I’d try yoga as I wanted to find something to enhance my life, but which didn’t rely on the weather, need another person to do it with, or lots of kit! A friend recommended a class, which turned out to be Ashtanga Yoga. The energetic and flowing style was very different from what I was expecting. I really loved it - not only the physical side but the fact I was very present during the practice and couldn’t think about anything else! It gave me space for myself amidst family, life and work.
Over the intervening years I have built up a daily Ashtanga practice (although wonderful Yin Yoga regularly features - especially on rest days) under the guidance of my long time teacher Dan Burt of House of Ashtanga.
As the years went by my Ashtanga practice developed and my life changed. I came to a point where I was able to take my career in a different direction and train as a Yoga teacher (with Northern Yoga Academy). You can find me around Newcastle, North Shields and the coast, teaching my own classes and assisting Dan Burt.
My Ashtanga class at Yoga Station lasts 1.5 hours. This allows time to practice a fixed series of dynamic postures (asana) linked with flowing movements (vinyasas), focusing on breath and internal locks (bandhas) and concludes with vital time to rest and restore (savasana). Classes are generally led, but self practice (Mysore) is welcomed for those familiar with the series.
Ashtanga yoga is traditionally not demonstrated by the teacher - you are shown the posture by physical adjustments and being talked through it - but where necessary I demonstrate!
All you need to bring along is patience and an open mind. Don’t worry about what you or your postures look like (there are no mirrors or judgement in my class) there is truly no “best” way to do a pose, just the best way for you on any given day.
My aim as a Yoga teacher is to provide a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment where all students can learn about Ashtanga Yoga and what it can do for them, whoever they are and whatever stage of life they are at. Hopefully you will feel nurtured and supported in your experience and find the balance Yoga can bring to your body and mind.
